Persephone, the daughter of Demeter the Greek Goddess of Harvest. She was abducted by Hades and taken into the Underworld, causing Demeter to become very unhappy and everything to wither and die. Before she is rescued, Hades persuades Persephone to eat 4 pomegranate seeds, which binds her to the Underworld for 4 months every year. During these 4 months we have Winter, because Demeter becomes unbearably unhappy.

Whew yeah, this was a fun painting though. Acrylic on stretched canvas. This photo of it is not exact.

I've heard a very different version of the Persephone story in my mythology class, although the essential basis is the same. There are various versions of the myth; some say she only ate one seed, others say six and there are many versions that say Persephone was not abducted, rather, Hades asked her father, Zeus, for permission to marry her and he agreed. Demeter, however, was not consulted, so when Persephone disappeared whilst picking flowers one day (Hades rose from the underground to claim his wife), she searched the earth for many days in order to find her daughter before informed of her daughter's fate. Some say Persephone went willingly, others say she was not quite happy about it and then later, she fell in love with Hades.

What really freaks me out is that her father, Zeus, and Hades are brothers. So Hades is essentially her uncle. e_0;;;

There's a lot of inbreeding in Greek Mythology.
I guess there were only so many Gods and most were related so it made breeding difficult.

Most likely. Everything did essentially come from Gaia and even Tartarus and Uranus were from her as well. o_O
